Deadlands: Boneyard Coming Soon!

“A jewel of a book that deserves to be shelved with Lewis Carroll’s and C. S. Lewis’ classics,
even as it carves its own precocious space between them.” —  NPR on Every Heart a Doorway

“This is a gorgeous story: sometimes mean, sometimes angry, and always exciting.”
— Cory Doctorow on Every Heart a Doorway

“McGuire’s lyrical prose makes this novella a rich experience.”
— Library Journal, starred review for Every Heart a Doorway

This October, Tor Books is proud to publish DEADLANDS:BONEYARD (A Tor Trade Paperback; $16.99; October 17, 2017) by award-winning author Seanan McGuire.

This lyrical weird western is breathed to life by McGuire’s signature in-depth character studies and gothic imagination. Annie Pearl found safety and a new home with the traveling circus as caretaker of the freaks and oddities. Now she, her daughter, and her fellow circus denizens are threatened by an unplanned stop in a town that seems too good to be true, a town where visitors have to pay a price. Westworld meets Twin Peaks in this enthralling tale of circus performers menaced by the citizens of a small town. Step right up to see the oddities and marvels of The Blackstone Family Circus and Traveling Wonder Show! Gasp at pit wasps the size of a man’s forearm. Beware the pumpkin-headed corn stalker, lest it plant its roots in you! Annie Pearl is the keeper of oddities, the mistress of monsters. Her unique collection of creatures is one of the circus’s star attractions, drawing wide-eyed crowds at every small frontier town they visit. But Annie is also a woman running from her past…and the mother of a young daughter, Adeline, whom she will do anything to protect. Hoping to fill its coffers before winter sets in, the circus steers its wagons to The Clearing, a remote community deep in the Oregon wilderness, surrounded by an ominous dark wood.

Word is that a traveling show can turn a tidy profit at The Clearing, but there are whispers, too, of unexplained disappearances that afflict one out of every four shows that pass through the town. The Clearing has it secrets, and so does Annie. And it may take everything she has to save her daughter — and the circus — from both.

For fans of McGuire’s award-winning work, as well as longtime fans of the DEADLANDS alternate history roleplaying game, BONEYARD is the perfect chilling fall read.

ITEM! Did You Thank a Letterer on the First National Letterer Appreciation Day?
When you make comics you learn that sometimes the people you depend on most to step up, deliver, and really make a project shine are often the ones the least applauded and cheered by the fans. Take Letterers, the unsung heroes and heroines of comics! Without letterers, you couldn’t read a single comic you buy! Their job is to design a book, add the story dialogue and captions, and do it in the way that works best and is least noticeable, meaning most times when people actually think about the lettering, it’s because someone did a crappy job!

We at Visionary are very thankful for our Production Chief Jacob Bascle, who is our letterer on every Visionary project! Our CCO had this to say about our stalwart PC – “Jacob is one of the few people I can send something to, give the briefest notes and explanations, and a deadline and ALWAYS know I will get better than what I asked for and on time! We sync, and that is the best kind of creative relationship you can have.”

Next time you read a comic, maybe take a moment to thank a letterer.
