Pet Piranha Entertainment has launched a campaign on Kickstarter to print copies of its new graphic novel, Astral Genesis.  They’ve already hit their goal, and the book is completed, so this is an easy win.  Backers may pledge for a book and other Astral “swag” like stickers, magnets, trading cards, prints, and posters.

“We’re extremely pleased with how the campaign is doing so far,” declared Pet Piranha founder, Jay Magnum, “Thanks to our generous backers, the Astral Genesis Kickstarter Event is shaping up to be a huge success!”

Artwork for the 120-page graphic novel was produced through studio partner, Visionary Creative Services, managed by Chief Creative Officer, C. Edward Sellner.  Illustrations for the book were created by Ariel Medel (Xena: Warrior Princess, John Carter: Warlord of Mars), with inks by Victor Ricardo Nava Corona, colors by Erick Arciniega and Ander Zarate, and lettering by Jacob Bascle.

“I really have to hand it to the art team,” remarked Magnum, “Ariel, Victor, Erick, and Ander did an awesome job!  Astral Genesis is a beautiful book, thanks to the exceptional, top-quality artwork delivered by Visionary!”

In the story, disgraced ex-astronaut, Jonathan DeVane, must assemble a rag-tag team of misfits to stop a devastating attack on Earth by malevolent alien raiders called “Astrals”.  Can DeVane and his miscreants find salvation in each other, and overcome the demons of their sordid pasts long enough to save the world?  …or is doomsday inevitable?

Find out in Astral Genesis!

The Astral Genesis Kickstarter Event is LIVE now through Friday, October 20th.

Deadlands: The Boneyard Details!

Step right up and join Seanan McGuire’s weird west circus!

“A jewel of a book that deserves to be shelved with Lewis Carroll’s and
C. S. Lewis’ classics, even as it carves its own precocious space between them.”

—NPR on Every Heart a Doorway

“This is a gorgeous story: sometimes mean, sometimes angry, and always exciting.”

—Cory Doctorow on Every Heart a Doorway

“McGuire’s lyrical prose makes this novella a rich experience.”

—Library Journal, starred review for Every Heart a Doorway

This October, Tor Books is proud to publish DEADLANDS: BONEYARD (A Tor Trade Paperback; $16.99; October 17, 2017) by multiple award-winning author Seanan McGuire. This lyrical weird western is breathed to life by McGuire’s signature in-depth character studies and gothic imagination. Annie Pearl found safety and a new home with the traveling circus as caretaker of the freaks and oddities. Now she, her daughter, and her fellow circus denizens are threatened by an unplanned stop in a town that seems too good to be true, a town where visitors have to pay a price. Westworld meets Twin Peaks in this enthralling tale of circus performers menaced by the citizens of a small town.

Step right up to see the oddities and marvels of The Blackstone Family Circus and Travelling Wonder Show! Gasp at pit wasps the size of a man’s forearm. Beware the pumpkin-headed corn stalker, lest it plant its roots in you!

Annie Pearl is the keeper of oddities, the mistress of monsters. Her unique collection of creatures is one of the circus’s star attractions, drawing wide-eyed crowds at every small frontier town they visit. But Annie is also a woman running from her past… and the mother of a young daughter, Adeline, whom she will do anything to protect.

Hoping to fill its coffers before winter sets in, the circus steers its wagons to The Clearing, a remote community deep in the Oregon wilderness, surrounded by an ominous dark wood. Word is that a travelling show can turn a tidy profit at The Clearing, but there are whispers, too, of unexplained disappearances that afflict one out of every four shows that pass through the town.

The Clearing has it secrets, and so does Annie. And it may take everything she has to save her daughter—and the circus—from both.

For fans of McGuire’s award-winning work, as well as longtime fans of the DEADLANDS alternate history roleplaying game, BONEYARD is the perfect chilling fall read.

ITEM! Did You Thank a Letterer on the First National Letterer Appreciation Day?
When you make comics you learn that sometimes the people you depend on most to step up, deliver, and really make a project shine are often the ones the least applauded and cheered by the fans. Take Letterers, the unsung heroes and heroines of comics! Without letterers, you couldn’t read a single comic you buy! Their job is to design a book, add the story dialogue and captions, and do it in the way that works best and is least noticeable, meaning most times when people actually think about the lettering, it’s because someone did a crappy job!

We at Visionary are very thankful for our Production Chief Jacob Bascle, who is our letterer on every Visionary project! Our CCO had this to say about our stalwart PC – “Jacob is one of the few people I can send something to, give the briefest notes and explanations, and a deadline and ALWAYS know I will get better than what I asked for and on time! We sync, and that is the best kind of creative relationship you can have.”

Next time you read a comic, maybe take a moment to thank a letterer.

Visionary Salutes Jack “King” Kirby!

Today marks what would have been the 100th birthday of Jack “King” Kirby, the greatest comics’ visionary of all time.

Now, that may sound like a bold statement, but it’s really a pretty simple observation. No one has artistically influenced the modern era of comics more than Kirby, and the characters that he created and co-created comprise the majority of the most well-known, iconic and well-loved characters in the history of the medium.

There are going to be a ton of reflections, stories, and art from Kirby posted all over today and in days to come. Many from people who knew him well, others who may have only met him briefly and yet never forgot, all from folks he inspired. That includes all of us here at Visionary, and most definitely myself as a creator.

I like to think of it as the fact that Kirby defined the visual language of comics, in such a way that even today has never been equaled, but often imitated. His work literally defined western comics as a medium, an artform, and a pop-culture phenomenon.

If you’re fans of great creators out there, check their Facebook, their Twitters, their Blogs and Tumblrs, and my guess is you’ll see the vast majority paying tribute to a man who stands above us all, and always will.

Weekly Visions 8.17.17: Dover and a Steady Hand

Hey Everyone! Welcome back!

We’re short and sweet this week, with a quick spotlight on this weekend’s Dover Con, and a new project from our friends at Riot Scene Pictures! Enjoy!

Dover remains one of our favorite shows. It’s one of several library sponsored and supported shows we do, meaning it benefits great programs and services from the Dover Public Library. It’s also part community festival and part comic-con. There is no cost for entry, and the programs, live events and vendors fill the Library, a couple other civic buildings, and the downtown Dover municipal square! Plus, food trucks galore!

If you’re anywhere near, come spend the day and bring the whole family!

Visionary has always been about shining a spotlight on new and upcoming talent and their dynamic projects! Well, this week we want to take you to the movies with a new film from a great new director and small indie studio based in Baltimore.

Riot Scene Pictures is the brainchild studio of director Taylor Young, who already has a few films under his belt. For his latest work, he is currently raising funds to enter the finished film in various Film Festivals and you can help out. Check it out!

“Who’s in control? The writer or his characters?”

This psychological drama stars Tray Chaney (HBO’s “The Wire” & Bounce TV’s “Saints + Sinners”), Taylor Young, Michelle Jones, Steve Malm, and Cameron Martino.”

When writer Morris Kennedy (Taylor Young) isolates himself to write a screenplay commissioned by famous rapper T. Pryor (Tray Chaney), he gradually loses his sanity and finds himself face to face with his characters. He struggles to solve the mystery while his characters, sharing the faces of his loved ones (Michelle Jones, Steve Malm, Cameron Martino), compel his attention.

Steady Hand was written and directed by Taylor Young and shot in Baltimore, MD. Riot Scene Pictures aims to produce original, entertaining, and thought-provoking motion picture content of all genres. The group of friends behind Riot Scene Pictures has been working together for over a decade and are excited to share their latest project, Steady Hand, with film festivals both domestic and abroad.

Visionary loves the arts, not just comics, but all forms of art! Which is why, every once in a while, we will spotlight something really cool we want folks to know about. It may be new releases in books or comics, or upcoming art focused events,  from our partners, friends, or supporters!

The Annapolis Summer Garden Theater is running a great new show called, In the Heights.

Here’s what the Bay Weekly had to say:
“The hottest thing in Annapolis these days isn’t the weather but Lin Manuel-Miranda’s In the Heights, playing through Memorial Day weekend at The Annapolis Summer Garden Theatre. Under the direction of Darnell Patrick Morris, the same guy who brought us Avenue Q and Hair Spray, this production is so outstanding it’s easy to see why the Hamilton composer’s show won the 2008 Tony for Best Musical. Here at the confluence of rap, salsa, and Latin pop, the American dream meets exotic choreography in New York City’s Dominican barrio to produce a story that transcends race, age and economic status.”

Kickstarter Spotlight: Fight of the Century

Fight of the Century is a 120-page biopunk, MMA, original graphic novel, now live on Kickstarter through August 11.

In a futuristic Brazil, performance-enhancing drugs have gone from behind-the-scenes banned substances to front-and-center game changers. The sports world as we know it has been revolutionized! Nowhere is that more on display than inside Neo-Rio, a mega-city that serves as the home to the Fighters Ultimate Exhibition League (FUEL). Men are becoming monsters in minutes as fighters are putting their lives on the line in the octagon.
FOTC is an action-packed drama that examines humanities desire to become bigger, faster and stronger; while exploring the price we’re willing to pay to reach our maximum potential. With influences from ROCKY to AKIRA to FRANKENSTEIN, it’s a comeback story about a man whose unlikely return will inspire a nation.

You can also follow their posts on Facebook!
