Deadlands: Thunder Moon Rising Reviews

Deadlands Thunder Moon Rising Cover Art

“Beyond Tuck Bringloe, who has a peach of a story arc, I honestly had little idea which of the cast of characters would become prominent and which would be ruthlessly killed off. I’ve been told by a couple of authors that every single character are the lead of their own story and they should be written that way. Mariotte does a fantastic job of doing that here, because even his minor characters are drawn well enough to invite us into their lives. It felt notable when they died and it felt important when those with a higher purpose met each other.” – Hal C F Astell at The Nameless Zine

“I couldn’t stop reading, the pages turned as fast as I could. What a mix the author treats us to. The book was different and refreshing. Something on the other side of the regular western read. I liked the fact that Tucker was used as the one to actually lead the search. It sent a message while giving the reader a character that you wouldn’t ever expect to have the guts and the character to do what he did.” – Gayle Pace

“This isn’t the Wild West, it’s the weird west. The author not only gives you the gunfighters of the west in Arizona territory but you get scientists that are on the edge of reality and then we get the unexplainable evil forces that exist everywhere. ” –Night Owl Paranormal

Spotlight

We often get people thinking Visionary is primarily a publisher, but we’re actually not, we’re a production studio and transmedia development company. Which basically means we’re more focused on creating the great content and then work with partners in getting that content out there.

Our staff are primarily creators, writers, artists, editors, letterers and graphic design artists. We’re a little bit creator studio, a collective of creative braintrusts, and a lean mean transmedia machine!

Our imprints, Visionary Comics and Visionary Books are for the content we actually package and release through our publishing partners, great folks like Tor Books, IDW, and Image Comics for print, and Amazon, Comixology, iVerse, and Drive-Thru for digital. We are also in the process of launching our own online store you can find right on our main site that will soon be stocked with all our exclusive merchandise, both digital and physical, including comics, books, playing cards, prints and more! We’ll be relaunching our digital publishing initiative early 2017, so look for the announcement!

As a creative production studio our focus is providing high quality content for clients of all kinds! We’ve created a couple thousand pages of prose, several hundred pages of comics, and dozens of covers, illustrations and custom art in just the last year and will be doing even more this coming year. Some of those could be for YOUR PROJECT!

We’ve worked with Hollywood producers, top publishers, top creators, sports stars, celebrities, and other studios, as well as great non-profits, universities, museums and other educational organizations! We’ll be doing several spotlights on our various creative services and announcing new packaging deals early in 2017! Interested? Get our Services One-Sheet NOW!

Visionary Internship Program Update

Visionary has a long tradition of bringing new creators into the industry and doing our part to educate, inspire, and train the next generation of great talent. To that end we relaunched our highly successful internship program last year. Half of our current staff were promoted up from internships and we currently boast our largest class ever as of the end of 2016, with a total of eight active interns!

What do Visionary interns get to do? They hang out once a month at CCO C. Edward Sellner’s place, eat pizza, learn about making comics, being a professional freelancer, get to participate in comic awards, and get to work on projects as support, managers, and even do creative work! That’s the good news!

The bad news (especially if we just got you all excited about the program) is we are now full for the quarter. We may reopen applications in the Spring. Stay tuned to be the first to know! Spots fill fast! We’ll be introducing our final additions for the year soon!

Visionary Announces Major Expansion with Tenth Anniversary

Visionary 2.0 2 Main Site

Visionary Comics, a production studio and digital publisher, is marking 10 years in the creative industry by announcing the hiring of two well-known industry execs and a retooled website as the first phase of a major expansion that will extend into 2016. Company leaders are calling the initiative “Visionary 2.0.”

“We’ve been working hard the last few months to move Visionary to the forefront of the industry and wanted to announce our first exciting changes at Tucson Comic Con,” says C. Edward Sellner, the company’s Chief Creative Officer. The eighth annual event kicked off at the Tucson Convention Center in Tucson, AZ, on November 6, and wraps its three day run Sunday. Visionary execs made the exclusive announcements today at a panel during the popular show.

The major additions to the company’s leadership include promotion of Jeff Mariotte as editor-in-chief, division chief for Visionary Books, and corporate partner, along with Andy Smith, who will serve as division chief of Visionary Arts.

Mariotte is an award-winning author of comics and prose, including his latest work entitled Empty Rooms. He will continue handling Visionary’s work with the popular Deadlands novels from Tor Books and will be launching new projects from the company in 2016. Smith is a top ranked professional artist, with a resume that includes extensive work on Marvel, DC, and Disney comic and book projects.

“We could not be more thrilled to have Jeff join us in an exclusive partnership, and to be bringing Andy on board. Both of these gentlemen bring a new level of expertise and skill to the studio and will help define us into our next decade,’ says Visionary Chief Financial Officer Charlie Hall.

“Having helped elevate two different startups, WildStorm Productions and IDW Publishing, into the top ranks of comics and entertainment, I had thought my publishing days were behind me,” Mariotte says. “But the folks at Visionary are so smart, so honest, and so great at what they do, they drew me back in. Having a home for my own projects as well as the opportunity to help other creators realize their goals is too good a deal to pass up. This time, I’m going to stay a while.”

In addition, Visionary has virtually doubled its total staff handling day-to-day operations. Sellner states that Visionary’s growth will reflect a change in its overall mission and expansion of its goals. “We’re really not just Visionary Comics anymore, we’re now getting into prose fiction, children’s books, corporate branding, concept and design, etc. As a result, our core identity moving forward will be Visionary Creative Services, the banner for our actual production studio. Our brand labels will then better reflect the product and their respective markets.”

These will include new titles under Visionary Comics, and the debut of Visionary Books with its upcoming Tor offerings, as well as others in the works. Next year will see new labels debut as well as Visionary moves more solidly into new markets.

All of the details about the company’s expanded vision can be found on its relaunched website, still found at visionarycomics.com. Online readers will quickly notice the new layout, says the designer.

“We wanted the site to showcase the visual talents of the professionals at Visionary,” says Liesl Lukacs, web designer and partner for VineBUZZ, the Ranson, WV-based company hired to manage Visionary’s marketing. “They are creating visual masterpieces; so we wanted to use the art to draw people in to learn more about this great company through their blog, newsletter and site pages that chronicle their history and exciting future.”

Sellner adds, “VineBUZZ is another important piece to the Visionary puzzle. With their help, we have a new online home, and plans are being laid for our ongoing marketing and promotion for the company, its services and our titles, to get Visionary out where it belongs – in the spotlight.”

Other initiatives for the coming year include the relaunching of Visionary’s digital publishing efforts, which will include debuting new and revamped content on leading venues, such as Comixology, Amazon, iVerse, and Drive-Thru. Additionally the effort will expand into several newer and fast-growing venues, such as Madefire. The company will also launch its own studio owned properties under their own imprint, Visionary Creation. The new banner will feature properties uniquely created and targeted for transmedia development. These will debut with Visionary as comics and prose, and will become part of the growing library of intellectual properties Visionary represents for all forms of media.

Visionary Announces Expansion – New Partnerships

PR2014PromotionalFinalVisionary Comics has been around a while, and some have called it one of the best-kept secrets in comics. Known as a top quality production studio, and the first digital-exclusive publisher supporting creator-owned projects, they also became the first production studio to throw its hat in the licensing ring with Deadlands. This fall, however, the secret is out, and Visionary is on the move.

Visionary has virtually doubled its staff in recent months, adding Webmaster and AV Chief Christiaan Conover, Admin Director Cathy Dougherty, and Art Manager Mike Munshaw. The studio has also added big guns Jeff Mariotte (comic writer, author) and Shane Hensley (creator of Deadlands) to focus on its expansion into prose publishing and transmedia development.

As part of this expansion, Visionary has announced Deadlands-focused partnerships with IDW Publishing, which will be publishing the first trade, Dead Man’s Hand, in March of 2015, and Tor Books, which will be publishing a line of prose novels coming later next year.

Dead Man’s Hand collects Deadlands one-shots published by Visionary and Image Comics, and features a stunning list of talent: David Gallaher, Steve Ellis, Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray, Lee Moder, Ron Marz, Bart Sears, Jeff Mariotte, Brook Turner, and Michael Atiyeh. The comics were called “All-Star Westerns” by the media, and the full collection has been much anticipated.

The new novel line will kick off with three books, by New York Times bestselling authors Jonathan Maberry, Seanan McGuire, and Jeff Mariotte. Release dates have yet to be confirmed but production has begun in earnest.

In the midst of all this, Deadlands remains in active development for a live-action TV Series.

Visionary has no intention of stopping there, and just announced at Baltimore Comic-Con an exclusive new line of comics under its new Creation imprint. The new imprint will debut on their new webcomics portal, now in an initial test phase on their website. The studio promises a unique line of titles, diverse in genre, format, and focus. They also promise some unique means of fan involvement in what is shaping up to be a promising launch scheduled to roll out over the rest of 2014.

Visionary Chief Creative Officer C. Edward Sellner said, “We’ve been working toward this stage for a long time, and now that we’re reaching it, I can’t wait for the fans to see what we’re putting together for them. This is truly a new era for Visionary, and for comics.” Stay tuned for more details!

A New Creation Dawns

Creation Dawns

On Saturday, September 6th, at 12pm, at the Baltimore Comic-Con, a new creation is about to dawn! When we launched Visionary seven years ago, this was why. Join us as we bring new worlds, new stories, new characters to life! We officially announce our new line of comics at our exclusive panel in room 349-350. Do not miss it!

Meet Visionary’s 2014 Interns!

Cathy Dougherty In 2012 Visionary launched its first, official internship program in conjunction with its Comic Creation Course at Anne Arundel Community College. Two classes of interns joined, for a total of six interns, and together the group had nearly a full year of down and dirty comic creation experience!

The program was part of our Digital Publishing Initiative and gave aspiring professionals an opportunity to work on actual comic book publishing, submissions review, project management and development. They also received one-on-one supervision and training in creative skills, managing freelance work, and developing their own projects.

SarahWhen Visionary scaled back the Digital Publishing Initiative at the end of that year, the program was closed down as part of the re-organization.

However, Visionary is proud to announce that it has resumed its internship program as of 2014 with a slightly different focus. The new program will be a little more lean and mean, with fewer slots, and an increased focus on developing hard skills and active work on actual projects. Two candidates have already joined the program, and are already working on paid, professional projects, doing writing, color flatting, and editing work, all under CCO supervision. Meet Cathy Dougherty (actually returning from the 2012 class) and Sarah Louise Patterson, who is introducing Visionary to the world of cosplay!

We here at Visionary Central think you’ll be hearing a lot from these ladies as time goes by, and we’re very excited to have them on board. Check out all the details on our Staff Page.

Visionary Imprints

Visionary debuted its two publishing imprints after it launched its digital-publishing initiative in 2011. The imprints were to help define the two very different focal points for the company.

“The whole point of the digital publishing initiative was to both celebrate the diversity of comics, and to show the world what Visionary could do, the level of quality we could achieve.” Chief Creative Officer C. Edward Sellner shared in an interview. “We wanted to celebrate and help support the independent comics market, but we also wanted to show we could produce quality, both in production and publishing that could stand proud next to anything else on the stands of the mainstream market.” With that, Indi-Visions, and Visionary Select were born.

IndieVisionsIndi-Visions are those titles published by Visionary with a fiercely independent flavor. Some of these books might be diamonds still in the rough, sometimes with art, sometimes with story, but something about them still shines through.

Visionary_SelectVisionary Select represents those highest quality titles Visionary has published, and those produced in-house by the studio itself. “The Select brand is Visionary through and through.” Sellner added.

Visionary celebrates our current imprints and will be running a number of spotlights on various published titles as we ramp up to launch a new imprint in 2014. “We’re laying the ground work now for a new imprint that will be the imprint Visionary was created for. We can’t wait for folks to start seeing the first teasers for these titles, as we shift our focus to developing this exciting new line.”

Check out our Imprints page for more.
