Pet Piranha Entertainment has launched a campaign on Kickstarter to print copies of its new graphic novel, Astral Genesis.  They’ve already hit their goal, and the book is completed, so this is an easy win.  Backers may pledge for a book and other Astral “swag” like stickers, magnets, trading cards, prints, and posters.

“We’re extremely pleased with how the campaign is doing so far,” declared Pet Piranha founder, Jay Magnum, “Thanks to our generous backers, the Astral Genesis Kickstarter Event is shaping up to be a huge success!”

Artwork for the 120-page graphic novel was produced through studio partner, Visionary Creative Services, managed by Chief Creative Officer, C. Edward Sellner.  Illustrations for the book were created by Ariel Medel (Xena: Warrior Princess, John Carter: Warlord of Mars), with inks by Victor Ricardo Nava Corona, colors by Erick Arciniega and Ander Zarate, and lettering by Jacob Bascle.

“I really have to hand it to the art team,” remarked Magnum, “Ariel, Victor, Erick, and Ander did an awesome job!  Astral Genesis is a beautiful book, thanks to the exceptional, top-quality artwork delivered by Visionary!”

In the story, disgraced ex-astronaut, Jonathan DeVane, must assemble a rag-tag team of misfits to stop a devastating attack on Earth by malevolent alien raiders called “Astrals”.  Can DeVane and his miscreants find salvation in each other, and overcome the demons of their sordid pasts long enough to save the world?  …or is doomsday inevitable?

Find out in Astral Genesis!

The Astral Genesis Kickstarter Event is LIVE now through Friday, October 20th.

Deadlands: The Boneyard Details!

Step right up and join Seanan McGuire’s weird west circus!

“A jewel of a book that deserves to be shelved with Lewis Carroll’s and
C. S. Lewis’ classics, even as it carves its own precocious space between them.”

—NPR on Every Heart a Doorway

“This is a gorgeous story: sometimes mean, sometimes angry, and always exciting.”

—Cory Doctorow on Every Heart a Doorway

“McGuire’s lyrical prose makes this novella a rich experience.”

—Library Journal, starred review for Every Heart a Doorway

This October, Tor Books is proud to publish DEADLANDS: BONEYARD (A Tor Trade Paperback; $16.99; October 17, 2017) by multiple award-winning author Seanan McGuire. This lyrical weird western is breathed to life by McGuire’s signature in-depth character studies and gothic imagination. Annie Pearl found safety and a new home with the traveling circus as caretaker of the freaks and oddities. Now she, her daughter, and her fellow circus denizens are threatened by an unplanned stop in a town that seems too good to be true, a town where visitors have to pay a price. Westworld meets Twin Peaks in this enthralling tale of circus performers menaced by the citizens of a small town.

Step right up to see the oddities and marvels of The Blackstone Family Circus and Travelling Wonder Show! Gasp at pit wasps the size of a man’s forearm. Beware the pumpkin-headed corn stalker, lest it plant its roots in you!

Annie Pearl is the keeper of oddities, the mistress of monsters. Her unique collection of creatures is one of the circus’s star attractions, drawing wide-eyed crowds at every small frontier town they visit. But Annie is also a woman running from her past… and the mother of a young daughter, Adeline, whom she will do anything to protect.

Hoping to fill its coffers before winter sets in, the circus steers its wagons to The Clearing, a remote community deep in the Oregon wilderness, surrounded by an ominous dark wood. Word is that a travelling show can turn a tidy profit at The Clearing, but there are whispers, too, of unexplained disappearances that afflict one out of every four shows that pass through the town.

The Clearing has it secrets, and so does Annie. And it may take everything she has to save her daughter—and the circus—from both.

For fans of McGuire’s award-winning work, as well as longtime fans of the DEADLANDS alternate history roleplaying game, BONEYARD is the perfect chilling fall read.

ITEM! Did You Thank a Letterer on the First National Letterer Appreciation Day?
When you make comics you learn that sometimes the people you depend on most to step up, deliver, and really make a project shine are often the ones the least applauded and cheered by the fans. Take Letterers, the unsung heroes and heroines of comics! Without letterers, you couldn’t read a single comic you buy! Their job is to design a book, add the story dialogue and captions, and do it in the way that works best and is least noticeable, meaning most times when people actually think about the lettering, it’s because someone did a crappy job!

We at Visionary are very thankful for our Production Chief Jacob Bascle, who is our letterer on every Visionary project! Our CCO had this to say about our stalwart PC – “Jacob is one of the few people I can send something to, give the briefest notes and explanations, and a deadline and ALWAYS know I will get better than what I asked for and on time! We sync, and that is the best kind of creative relationship you can have.”

Next time you read a comic, maybe take a moment to thank a letterer.

Kickstarter Spotlight: Fight of the Century

Fight of the Century is a 120-page biopunk, MMA, original graphic novel, now live on Kickstarter through August 11.

In a futuristic Brazil, performance-enhancing drugs have gone from behind-the-scenes banned substances to front-and-center game changers. The sports world as we know it has been revolutionized! Nowhere is that more on display than inside Neo-Rio, a mega-city that serves as the home to the Fighters Ultimate Exhibition League (FUEL). Men are becoming monsters in minutes as fighters are putting their lives on the line in the octagon.
FOTC is an action-packed drama that examines humanities desire to become bigger, faster and stronger; while exploring the price we’re willing to pay to reach our maximum potential. With influences from ROCKY to AKIRA to FRANKENSTEIN, it’s a comeback story about a man whose unlikely return will inspire a nation.

Deadlands: Thunder Moon Rising Reviews

Deadlands Thunder Moon Rising Cover Art

“Beyond Tuck Bringloe, who has a peach of a story arc, I honestly had little idea which of the cast of characters would become prominent and which would be ruthlessly killed off. I’ve been told by a couple of authors that every single character are the lead of their own story and they should be written that way. Mariotte does a fantastic job of doing that here, because even his minor characters are drawn well enough to invite us into their lives. It felt notable when they died and it felt important when those with a higher purpose met each other.” – Hal C F Astell at The Nameless Zine

“I couldn’t stop reading, the pages turned as fast as I could. What a mix the author treats us to. The book was different and refreshing. Something on the other side of the regular western read. I liked the fact that Tucker was used as the one to actually lead the search. It sent a message while giving the reader a character that you wouldn’t ever expect to have the guts and the character to do what he did.” – Gayle Pace

“This isn’t the Wild West, it’s the weird west. The author not only gives you the gunfighters of the west in Arizona territory but you get scientists that are on the edge of reality and then we get the unexplainable evil forces that exist everywhere. ” –Night Owl Paranormal

Spotlight

We often get people thinking Visionary is primarily a publisher, but we’re actually not, we’re a production studio and transmedia development company. Which basically means we’re more focused on creating the great content and then work with partners in getting that content out there.

Our staff are primarily creators, writers, artists, editors, letterers and graphic design artists. We’re a little bit creator studio, a collective of creative braintrusts, and a lean mean transmedia machine!

Our imprints, Visionary Comics and Visionary Books are for the content we actually package and release through our publishing partners, great folks like Tor Books, IDW, and Image Comics for print, and Amazon, Comixology, iVerse, and Drive-Thru for digital. We are also in the process of launching our own online store you can find right on our main site that will soon be stocked with all our exclusive merchandise, both digital and physical, including comics, books, playing cards, prints and more! Visionary Internship Program Update

Visionary has a long tradition of bringing new creators into the industry and doing our part to educate, inspire, and train the next generation of great talent. To that end we relaunched our highly successful internship program last year. Half of our current staff were promoted up from internships and we currently boast our largest class ever as of the end of 2016, with a total of eight active interns!

What do Visionary interns get to do? They hang out once a month at CCO C. Edward Sellner’s place, eat pizza, learn about making comics, being a professional freelancer, get to participate in comic awards, and get to work on projects as support, managers, and even do creative work! That’s the good news!

The bad news (especially if we just got you all excited about the program) is we are now full for the quarter. We may reopen applications in the Spring. Stay tuned to be the first to know! Spots fill fast! We’ll be introducing our final additions for the year soon!

SDCC

Weekly Visions 10.13.16: Reviews & an East / West Weekend with Visionary

Deadlands: Thunder Moon Rising headerDeadlands: Thunder Moon Rising

We love great reviews, and our books have gotten quite a few, but this recent one at Geeks of Doom really stood out to us.

It not only talks about the great story by author, Jeffrey J. Mariotte, but takes note of the amazing art team that’s been working on our Deadlands novels.

So, we thought we’d share a few excerpts!

“So, here we have a tale of what is on the back book cover affectionately called the Weird West. That couldn’t be more accurate, if you ask me. Strange things are happening in a tiny town in the Arizona Territory. It starts with animals being slaughtered in the most horrific ways and is soon followed by macabre slayings of local townfolk and ranch hands. As the story moves forward we get glimpses of what is causing it, though it makes no sense to the locals or the reader, for that matter. It gets progressively more violent until it almost seems that walking outside will get you killed. Only one man seems brave enough to follow the trail of death and destruction to its source, even though he might forfeit his life doing so. That man is Tucker Bringloe, former Union Officer turned drunken vagabond.”

“Bringloe stumbled upon the problem, quite literally, after one of the murders. Following a dangerous and deadly chase, he comes away with a healthy respect for the killer and though he tries to rally the town and gain information, he finds many people reluctant, or even resistant, to helping him track down those responsible.”

“I expected a fun story that revolves around the game setting or maybe even forces a few of the game mechanics into the thread, helping to tie it into the system itself. I was pleasantly surprised to find none of that at all. No trappings of RPGs exist within this tale. Instead, we get an expertly written novel from Jeffrey J. Mariotte that redefines the concept of the western story. Heavily laden with mysterious undertones and dank, dark settings, this tale circles around and around like a maelstrom pulling the reader deeper within its clutches, disallowing any retreat. You’ll find yourself forgoing sleep in order to read just one more chapter, only to leave you wanting to read even more.”

“And unlike the vast majority of books in this day and age, this one comes with illustrations scattered throughout. But not just some pencil and ink drawings; no, these are more like old wooden carvings, expertly rendered by Steve Ellis to show depth and emotion in the simplest of ways. In fact, were it not for the publication date in the book, I would have thought they were copies of something from the nineteenth century. That’s how expertly era-oriented they are!”

‘This book has such broad appeal that I hesitate to mention any one demographic that might enjoy it more than another. Within this story we have a variety of genres: horror, fantasy, western, romance, historical fiction, and more. Plus, you don’t have to have any connection with the game to enjoy this. I say that because I know almost nothing about the bestselling role-playing game. I will, however, be looking into it along with this particular author and other books in this series. It has made me a fan and I’ve never even played the game! That’s how convincing this writer has been. He has managed to create within me an interest in all things Deadlands.”

Weekly Visions 9.29.16: A Thunder Moon & Being Visionary

PR Banner Weekly Visions 6-30-16

Welcome back to our Weekly Visions post as we slide into Autumn and the closing months of 2016 – wow, what a year huh? But with the shorter days, cooler evenings, and stack of holidays this time of year brings, it really means more time for great comics and books!

We’re ramping up some nice stuff for our fans to debut this Fall, and will also start featuring some recommended reads from our friends in the industry, to make sure you never run short of great stuff to enjoy!

Deadlands: Thunder Moon Rising

If you missed the actual publishing announcement, our second Deadlands novel, by our very own Jeffrey J. Mariotte is now available, and already getting great reviews.

Fear is abroad in the Deadlands as a string of brutal killings and cattle mutilations trouble a frontier town in the Arizona Territory, nestled in the forbidding shadow of the rugged Thunder Mountains. A mule train is massacred, homes and ranches are attacked, and men and women are stalked and butchered by bestial killers who seem to be neither human nor animal. Meanwhile, a ruthless land baron tries to buy up all the surrounding territory—and possibly bring about an apocalypse.

Once an officer in the Union Army, Tucker Bringloe is now a worthless drunk begging for free drinks at the corner saloon. When he’s roped into a posse searching for the nameless killers, Tuck must rediscover the man he once was if he’s to halt the bloodshed and stop occult forces from unleashing Hell on Earth . . . when the Thunder Moon rises.

“In the end, Deadlands: Thunder Moon Rising is a great book that can not only be enjoyed by tabletop gamers but also fans of steampunk, science-fiction and history. The author does an immaculate job of creating a world that fans of Deadlands can truly explore and enjoy.” – Amanda Dyar of BioGamer Girl

Being Visionary

Artway Alliance Logo

Earlier this year we announced our “Be Visionary” initiative, a coordinated effort by the studio to start doing more for our local communities, to find creative ways of encouraging the arts, reaching out to children and youth, and giving back.

We launched the initiative with an announced partnership with Artway Alliance, a Maryland-based educational and interactive outreach that provides opportunities for children and youth to learn about the media arts, and encourages their own creativity and imagination.

We participated in a number of events with Artway offering our own workshop on “Be Your Own Superhero”  an interactive workshop that teaches kids what truly makes someone a hero or heroine, how to tap their own ‘superpowers’ in their own talents and skills, and use those powers to help others. Kids spent time designing their own superhero look, celebrating their gifts and what makes them who they are, and then participated in team building activities.

Thanks to Eric Suggs and the whole Artway Alliance crew, and shows like Girl-Scout Con, Columbia Comic-Con and the Baltimore Book Festival for hosting! Enjoy some pics from some of the events held this year!

Power Scourge KS BannerKickstarter Campaign for Power Scourge Update

There’s a quote about ‘best-laid plans’ and it definitely applies here. We had a great plan to really make our first direct Kickstarter an utterly amazing project that we knew could really catch on and become a huge success. We hit some bumps in getting everything ramped up, but rallied and managed to hit the launch deadline, even though it was a bit more forced than we liked, mostly thanks to an amazing team at the core of creating the initial content.

Then, we got pretty good confirmation we were right on the potential when we launched at Baltimore Comic-Con. The response was overwhelmingly positive. We left the con feeling there was no stopping us now!

Unfortunately, life had other plans. While Visionary has grown we are still a relatively small company, and a number of unforeseen circumstances with some key folks on our campaign team just piled up fast and furious, undermining a lot of our plans to promote, engage and build the campaign the way we intended. As a result, the necessary pieces of making this successful just did not happen.

Now, we could just try to push through, and try to hit the minimum goal, but that was not our intent, and we don’t want to ‘settle.’ We want all those great stories from all of our awesome creators and we want to have to go looking for more from top writers and artists to meet the demand.

As a result, we are going to suspend the campaign for now. By Kickstarter policy, that will mean canceling the funding and doing a full relaunch when we’re ready, once we’ve regrouped, replaced some key strategists and plans, and have a much more solid ground under our feet. We will also have more promotional and preview material in time for the relaunch, and once we come back, we will make it happen!

So, we certainly hope all of you will come back on board when we do relaunch. We will have promotional resources to help push the campaign from your end, and a more fully mapped out strategy and overview for the book to make it easier to jump in. If you decide to pass, or can’t, we understand and deeply apologize. Know, we seriously respect our fans and it is never our intent for something to not work out, but there are times those best-laid plans…

Thanks for all your support in all we do.
